Shared note

Recorded in the 1871 census in Uny Lelant reference 15-68, with wife Margaret aged 27. He was born St Just, she was born Lelant.

Couldn't find them in the 1881 census - they possibly emigrated with Benjamin father and stepmother in 1876.

Notes from David John & Lorraine Eddy: Apart from mention of his death date in the Family Bible saying that Benjamin was buried in the Broken Hill Cemetery, having died in that region on 16 December, 1890, little is known of him. His baptism records in Cornwall show he was baptized on July 21, 1850 at St. Just, ( a tin mine ) Penwith, Cornwall. In the 1871 Census for Lelant, Cornwall his address is given as Number 5 Carbis, with one child, Sarah (no age given). Benjamin is listed as being 21 years, a miner born in St. Just; Margaret, nee' Warmington, is listed as 27 years, born at Lelant and his wife. Living with them was Catherine Warmington, aged 35 years, Mine girl, born in Lelant. He arrived in South Australia in 1886 with his wife and child, but he only lived 4 years. We know he married, in the quarter ending June, 1870 in Penzance district at the age of 19 years somewhere around the copper fields of Cornwall, to Lands End, because that is the area covered by the Penzance district Register. His brother Samuel registered his death and listed Margaret as his wife, and Sarah as his only child, but no trace has ever been found of them. Margaret's insertion in the "Barrier Miner" dated 17/12/1891 says: "In Memoriam", "In memory of Benjamin Eddy, late of ***** (unable to read) City, Colorado, USA, died 16th December 1890 aged 40. Inserted by his wife and daughter. A search of records show nothing of Margaret or Sarah as having married or being buried here.

FOOTNOTE: I have pondered his brother Thomas, believed to be Margaret's nephew, taking her and Sarah to California or Colorado in the USA after his death. Thomas was known to be in Boulder until 1908 Census. I have not checked to see if Margaret or Sarah were recorded because at that stage I did not know their names and had assumed Benjamin to be the youngest member of the family since his name appeared last in the bible where only death dates were recorded. Perhaps members of the Warmington family left Cornwall for Colorado Goldfields and was the reason Benjamin initially did not come to South Australia with his father and brothers. Letters to his brothers in Australia mention that he was living with a Miss Minnie Warmington.
