Occupation

Miner; Storekeeper

Shared note

Richard was recorded as a miner of Botallack when children Mary, Richard were baptised (1835, 1837).

Recorded in the 1841 Census, reference St Just in Penwith 4-16 (Botallack): EDDY«tab»Richard«tab»30«tab»M«tab»Miner EDDY«tab»Ann«tab»25«tab»F EDDY«tab»Mary«tab»5«tab»F EDDY«tab»Richard«tab»3«tab»M EDDY«tab»John«tab»1«tab»M

In the 1851 census at No.142 at Roscommon, St Just in Penwith (3d-142): Richard«tab»EDDY«tab»H«tab»m«tab»39«tab»tin miner«tab»b.SJ Ann«tab»"«tab»W«tab»m«tab»36«tab»«tab»" Mary«tab»"«tab»D«tab»u«tab»15«tab»«tab»" Richard«tab»"«tab»S«tab»«tab»13«tab»«tab»" James«tab»"«tab»S«tab»«tab»11«tab»«tab»" Thomas«tab»"«tab»S«tab»«tab» 9«tab»«tab»" Esther«tab»"«tab»D«tab»«tab» 5«tab»«tab»" John«tab»"«tab»S«tab»«tab» 2«tab»«tab»"

Notes from Geoff McKee: Richard Grenfell EDDY 43, and sons Richard 17 and James 12 emigrated on "Mobile" arriving Melbourne in 1854. Ann EDDY with children John, Thomas, Esther and William emigrated on "Sea Park" leaving Plymouth, Devon, 11 Dec 1857 and arriving Melbourne 20 Mar 1858. Richard Grenfell EDDY died 30 Sep 1873 at Long Gully, Victoria aged 62. His death certificate indicated he was born in St Just, Cornwall, his parents were William EDDY miner and Mary EDDY formerly GRENFELL, and he had been 19 years in Victoria. Children were named as Mary 39, Richard 37, John 34, James 31, Thomas dead, Thomas 26, Esther 25, Wiliam 22 and Edward dead. Informant was Thomas TONKIN son-in-law of Long Gully.

I previously had that the family emigrated to Australia on the ship "Great Victoria" arriving Melbourne November 1863. I didn't record the source of this info, and since receiving contrary info from Geoff McKee, I believe the 1863 emigration now to be incorrect, especially as I can't find an entry for this family in the 1861 census.

Richard died in Sandhurst, a gold mining town, now called Bendigo. At that time Bendigo was a boom town in the heart of a major gold rush, very much in need of trained miners.
