I have assumed this to mean that there were 2 Henry Daniel EDDYs - with one dying in infancy. However, I could find no deaths registered in St. Just, so perhaps this was a second christening of the same child. St Just Note from Doug Eddy: As the story goes, Henry Daniel Eddy married Mary Wallis in 1857 and very soon after left for Australia. Mary was left in Cornwall pregnant with their first child, Mary Ann. Around 8 years later, Mary and Mary Ann sailed to Australia to be re-united with Henry Daniel. That is why their Australian children, starting with Henry, were born from 1868 onwards. Obituary: The Argus, Friday 16 February 1883 (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) FATAL MINING ACCIDENT [BY TELEGRAPH] (BY OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT) DAYLESFORD, THURSDAY. A sad occurrence took place at the South Star mine about midday to-day, by which a miner named Henry D. Eddy was instantly killed. Deceased, in company with another miner named Thornton, was coming up the shaft in a bucket, and on reaching the surface some larking appears to have taken place as to who should land first. It is stated that deceased laughingly pushed Thornton to the side and sprang off the bucket, but either miscalculating his distance, of his foot slipping, he disappeared down the shaft, which is 300ft. in depth. The body was immediately brought to the surface dreadfully mangled, the bones of the legs being forced up into the body. Deceased, who was a very old and respected resident of the district, leaves a widow and large family. He was treasurer of the local branch of the Miners' Association and an officer of the Hepburn Lodge of Oddfellows. The inquest will be conducted to-morrow by Mr. C. H. Nicholson, P.M.
