Marriage

Notes from Geoff McKee: Matthew EDDY (son of William EDDY and Jane OSBORNE) sojourner married Eliz. GEORGE 9 Feb 1779 St Buryan.

I need to investigate Matthew's parents further, but believe this is probably correct.

Shared note

Other children listed when baptised as children of Mathew/Matthew (no mother mentioned) in St Buryan are John 20 Apr 1783, Mathew 31 Dec 1784 and John 7 Jan 1787. These children are baptised at the right time to belong to this couple, and as there is only one marriage involving a Mathew/Matthew EDY/EDDY, I believe they all belong to this couple.

Assuming Matthew was at least 18 when married, there are the following possible baptisms: (a) Mathew EDDY, son of Mathew EDDY & Joan -, 15 Feb 1746 Zennor (b) Mathew EDDY, son of John EDDY & Mary -, 17 Feb 1748 Zennor (c) Matthew EDDY, son of William EDDY & - -, 27 Nov 1748 Madron (d) Mathew EDDY, son of Richard EDDY & Grace -, 18 Mar 1753 Zennor (e) Mathew EDDY, son of William EDDY & Mary -, 14 May 1753 Zennor (f) Mathew EDDY, son of William EDDY & Mary -, 20 Dec 1756 Zennor (g) Matthew EDDY, son of William EDDY & Parthenia -, 31 Dec 1758 Breage (h) Matthew EDDY, son of Matthew EDDY & Elisabeth -, 15 Dec 1760 Zennor

There is a burial record for a Matthew EDDY, 23 Feb 1816 in St Buryan, which fits this Matthew (especially given the Will below) and states he died aged 68, suggesting he was born 1747/48, so would have been about 31 when married. This would mean baptisms (b) and (c) are the most appropriate.

The marriage register has Matthew EDDY, sojourner, so we know he wasn't from St Buryan originally, but that doesn't help eliminate (b) or (c). Geoff McKee proposes (c) as the correct baptism, and that Willam's wife was Jane OSBORNE.

An email from another researcher suggests that Matthew baptised 27 Nov 1749 in Madron the son of William, whose father was William. I need to investigate this further (the 1749 is probably a typo and should be 1748).

Notes from Geoff McKee: Matthew EDDY, farmer of Bosliven, St Buryan, made a will 16 Feb 1816. The will named his wife Elizabeth; sons John (exec.), William, Richard and Matthew (away); daughters Jane, wife of John WARREN, Elizabeth, wife of William EDDY and Mary, wife of Robert WALLISH; and grandsons Matthew and John, sons of Matthew. Witnesses were William THOMAS, Thomas SAMMONS and Joseph WALLIS.

I need to check this will as I'm not sure whether the grandsons mentioned really are sons of Matthew... this could have been confused with John who definitely had sons named Matthew and John before the will was made. I looked for baptisms of a Matthew and a John to the same couple with father Matthew, and found one possible match; Matthew that married Alice ARTHURS. They were married in St Ives on 9 Oct 1804, and had at least 5 children baptised in St Ives. It is unlikely - but possible - that this Matthew belongs to this family.
