| Shared note | Haven't yet found this family in the 1871 census. In the 1881 Census at West Place, St Just (ref 16-114): Eddy«tab»Elizabeth«tab»Head«tab»M«tab»«tab»38«tab»Tin Miners Wife (Crossed Out)«tab»St Just Cornwall Eddy«tab»John«tab»Son«tab»«tab»11«tab»«tab»Scholar«tab»St Just Cornwall Eddy«tab»Elizabeth«tab»Dau«tab»«tab»«tab»7«tab»Scholar«tab»St Just Cornwall Eddy«tab»Mary«tab»Dau«tab»«tab»«tab»5«tab»Scholar«tab»St Just Cornwall In the 1891 Census at West Place, St Just (ref 16-122): Eddy«tab»John«tab»Head«tab»M«tab»46«tab»«tab»«tab»«tab»St Just Cornwall Eddy«tab»Elizabeth«tab»Wife«tab»M«tab»«tab»48«tab»«tab»«tab»St Just Cornwall Eddy«tab»John«tab»Son«tab»S«tab»21«tab»«tab»Tin Miner«tab»Employed«tab»St Just Cornwall Eddy«tab»Elizabeth«tab»Dau«tab»S«tab»«tab»17«tab»General Servant«tab»Employed«tab»St Just Cornwall Eddy«tab»Mary«tab»Dau«tab»«tab»«tab»13«tab»Scholar«tab»«tab»St Just Cornwall In the 1901 census wife Elizabeth is recorded as a widow. There is a burial for a John Eddy, 25 Mar 1895 St Just Wesleyan, aged 50 of Church Town, which I believe is probably this John. Given that John was aged 46 in the 1891 census (taken 5 April 1891) he would have been born 6 Apr 1844 to 5 Apr 1845 (assuming the age is correct), and baptised thereafter. There are several possible baptisms around that time: 1. John Row Eddy, 4 Mar 1844 in St Just, son of Peter (Miner of Carnyorth) and Elizabeth. (Too early to be this John - he would've been aged 47 for the 1891 census. Again, assuming the age at census was correct.) 2. John Eddy, 24 Mar 1844 in St Buryan, son of John (Labourer of St Levan) and Elizabeth. (Again, too early to be this John. St Buryan and St Levan provide further doubt.) 3. John Eddy, 9 Apr 1844 in St Buryan, son of Matthew (Labourer of Bosliven) and Jane. (This John appears to have died and is buried prior to the family emigrating.) 4. John Eddy, 6 Sep 1846 in St Just, son of James (miner of Botallack) and Mary. 5. John Nankervis Eddy, 24 Jan 1847 in St Just, son of John (miner of Trewellard) and Marianne. (Emigrated to Australia with his parents in 1848) 6. John Eddy, 31 Jan 1847 in St Just, son of John (miner of Church Town) and Jane. 7. John Eddy, 23 May 1847 in St Just, son of John (smith of Trewellard) and Jane. 8. John James Eddy, 28 Jun 1848 in Sancreed, son of Francis (miner of St Just) and Jane. (Died 1875 and is buried with his sister) Although I can't rule out baptisms 6 and 7, they are less likely as baptisms tended to be while the baby was younger. As such, I have assumed baptism 4 to be the correct one for this John - this may still be incorrect. |
