Shared note

There were several William EDDY and Elizabeth couples in St Just in the early 1800s, and trying to work out which of the many children belong to which couple is very difficult, especially for the earlier couples whose children had flown the nest before the census returns. This William and Elizabeth are one such couple.

There is a cluster of baptisms in St Buryan to a William and Elizabeth, all of which I believe most probably belong to this couple. Despite William being from St Just, Elizabeth was from St Buryan and I believe the family lived in St Buryan in the early years of their marriage but latterly moved to St Just. This in itself caused some confusion, along with a change of occupation for William.

The 1851 census has this couple at Chapel Street St Just, with William born St Just and Elizabeth born St Buryan, which matches this William and Elizabeth.

The baptisms for children Mary, William, John, Jenifred and Richard were all in St Buryan. William (the father) was recorded as a yeoman of Trevorian, St Buryan when children Jenifred and Richard were baptised (1813 and 1820). (Trevorian is linked to Elizabeth's family.)

However, the baptism for Eliza, is slightly different as she was baptised under the Penzance Wesleyan Circuit, although it does state their residence as St Buryan. This difference casts some doubt over whether this is the correct William and Elizabeth as parents for Eliza, but the only 1841 census record I can find for this couple has William (60, Tin Dresser) and Elizabeth (60) with an Eliza (20). The ages match very well, however William's occupation has changed from yeoman. I still believe this is the same William as the 1851 census has him as a Tin Miner, and living with them is grandson Thomas who I believe must belong to this William and Elizabeth (see notes under son John and grandson Thomas).

In the 1841 census at Boscaswell, St Just (ref 2-122): Eddy William 60 Tin Dresser Eddy Elizabeth 60 Eddy Eliza 20 Richards John 30 Mason This location seems at odds with locations for this family before and after 1841, but I can't find another record to match.

William was recorded as a miner of Bosavern when daughter Eliza was married (1843). ('Karn' Bosavern is where William's mother was from when buried.)

In the 1851 census at Chapel Street, St Just (ref 3k-154): Eddy William head m 70 Tin Miner St Just Eddy Elizabeth wife m 72 St Buryan Eddy Thomas g.son m 20 Tin Miner Sennen Eddy Margaret g.dau m 22 St Just Eddy Elizabeath Ann g.g.dau 1 St Just Short Eliza visitor u 16

I believe Thomas is the (base) son of John (and Sarah WALLISH), Margaret is his wife (so not actually William's granddaughter) and Elizabeth Ann is their daughter.

I suspect that William died between 1851 and 1861 as the 1861 census has wife Elizabeth living with grandson Thomas and family, and no sign of William. I have checked the burial records between these dates, and only one that is a possible match: 18 Apr 1856 at St Just Wesleyan. However, it holds no other clues (age or residence), so could easily be a different William EDDY.
