| Shared note | I previously had James EDDY's parents as William EDDY and Elizabeth FURZE, and William's parents were Peter EDDY and Mary HILL, from another source. However I cannot find information to back this statement, and in fact have found contrary information. James and Gracie were buried together, and from their MI, James was born 1882 and Gracie 1885. There is a baptism record for a James EDDY, 20 Jul 1883 in St Just, son of Jane of Carnyorth, however, I'm not convinced this is this James. The 1891 census has several James EDDY's about the right age, but only one with father William (4 Cape Cornwall Terrace (Ref St Just 11-7) who was married to Mary nee BOTTRELL. However, this would mean the initial statement was incorrect regarding the mother for James (not being Elizabeth), and would therefore cast doubt over whether James' father was even a William! If we then go back to the 1891 census, there are 3 other James EDDYs in the area aged 8 or 9 so as to match the MI. Ignoring this for the moment and investigating the rest of the initial statement, I can't find a marriage record for a Peter EDDY and a Mary HILL. However there is a baptism for an Elizabeth Thomas FURZE, 25 Jun 1840 in St Just, daughter of Peter (labourer, Bartinne) and Mary. She also had a brother, William baptised 11 Jan 1839 in St Just (Peter was a miner of Bartinne). (Note, I can't find a marriage record between Peter and Mary.) The only Peter EDDY and Mary marriages I can find are: (a) to Mary COCK, 23 Jan 1838 in St Just. (b) to Mary WILLIAMS, 2 Nov 1865 in St Just I would say (b) is unlikely, unless they had an illegitimate son William, or they had a son immediately who fathered James aged 17. A breakthrough comes from the Cornwall OPC's transcription of the marriage between James and Gracie, in that it states his father as being called James! As such I have dismissed the initial statement as being at least partially incorrect. If it was anecdotal, there may be some correct elements that were muddled over time. Kept for reference. Searching the 1891 census there is a James aged 9, son of James EDDY at Bollowall Cliff, St Just (ref 11-35), which matches this James. Also, James has a brother William H., and when James and Gracie married there was a witness William Henry EDDY which is probably this William H. |
