Marriage

Notes from Geoff McKee: Married by banns, both of this parish, in the presence of John COCK and John TREGEAR.

Shared note

In the 1841 census, ref St Just in Penwith 5-29 (Nancherrow), all born in Cornwall: EDDY«tab»Peter«tab»25«tab»1816«tab»M«tab»Tin Miner«tab» EDDY«tab»Mary«tab»25«tab»1816«tab»F«tab»«tab» EDDY«tab»John«tab»1«tab»1840«tab»M«tab»«tab»

Info from Geoff McKee suggests Mary was buried 24 May 1846 in St Just aged 33 of Churchtown.

I can't find a marriage entry between a Peter and an Elizabeth, but it must have happened between 1846 and 1848, and given that their first 2 children were born in Pontypool, in Wales, they could have married there.

The 1851 Census (from Geoff McKee) had No.30 at Trenance Mine, Mullion, Peter«tab»EDDY«tab»H«tab»m«tab»34«tab»copper miner Eliz.«tab»"«tab»W«tab»m«tab»24 John«tab»"«tab»S«tab»«tab»11«tab»} [of first marriage] Peter«tab»"«tab»S«tab»«tab» 8«tab»} [of first marriage] Richard«tab»"«tab»S«tab»«tab» 3 Wm.«tab»"«tab»S«tab»«tab» 1

In the 1861 census, ref St Just in Penwith 15-126 (Nancherrow Terrace): EDDY«tab»Peter«tab»Head«tab»M«tab»44«tab»St Just CON«tab» EDDY«tab»Elizabeth«tab»Wife«tab»M«tab»34«tab»St Just CON«tab» EDDY«tab»John«tab»Son«tab»U«tab»21«tab»St Just CON«tab» EDDY«tab»Richard«tab»Son«tab»-«tab»13«tab»- WLS«tab» EDDY«tab»William«tab»Son«tab»-«tab»11«tab»- WLS«tab» EDDY«tab»Elizabeth«tab»Daughter«tab»-«tab»9«tab»Mullion CON«tab» EDDY«tab»Henry«tab»Son«tab»-«tab»8«tab»St Just CON«tab» EDDY«tab»Anne«tab»Daughter«tab»-«tab»6«tab»St Just CON«tab» EDDY«tab»James«tab»Son«tab»-«tab»4«tab»St Just CON«tab» EDDY«tab»Honor«tab»Daughter«tab»-«tab»2«tab»St Just CON«tab» EDDY«tab»Thomas«tab»Son«tab»-«tab»10m«tab»St Just CON«tab»

The 13 year age gap between Elizabeth and 'son' John in both the 1851 and 1861 census returns, reinforces that John must have been from a previous marriage. The only appropriate baptism record to tally with this and the 1841 census is that of John EDDY, son of Peter EDDY & Mary, 19 Apr 1840 St Just in Penwith.

Peter was a miner of Church Town, St Just when daughter Margaret was baptised (8 Feb 1871).

In the 1871 census, ref St Just in Penwith 15-122 (North Row): EDDY«tab»Peter«tab»Head«tab»M«tab»54«tab»St Just - CON«tab» EDDY«tab»Elizabeth«tab»Wife«tab»M«tab»44«tab»St Just - CON«tab» EDDY«tab»Richard«tab»Son«tab»U«tab»23«tab»Pontypool - MON«tab» EDDY«tab»William«tab»Son«tab»U«tab»21«tab»Pontypool - MON«tab» EDDY«tab»Henry«tab»Son«tab»U«tab»18«tab»St Just - CON«tab» EDDY«tab»Anne«tab»Daughter«tab»U«tab»16«tab»St Just - CON«tab» EDDY«tab»James«tab»Son«tab»-«tab»14«tab»St Just - CON«tab» EDDY«tab»Thomas«tab»Son«tab»-«tab»10«tab»St Just - CON«tab» EDDY«tab»Mary Ann«tab»Daughter«tab»-«tab»9«tab»St Just - CON«tab» EDDY«tab»Margaret«tab»Daughter«tab»-«tab»4«tab»St Just - CON

From the ages given in the census returns, Peter was born about 1817. There are 2 possible baptism entries: (a) Peter EDDY son of Richard EDDY (miner of Botallack) & Margaret - 03 Nov 1816 St Just in Penwith (b) Peter EDDY son of Peter EDDY (miner of Kenidjack) & Mary -, 06 Jan 1817 St Just in Penwith.

In the 1841 census I believe (b) is aged 20 and with Matthew EDDY (aged 94) at Kenidjack (Peter's grandfather). Therefore I believe the correct baptism is (a).

Peter was buried 31 Jul 1884 in St Just, aged 67 of Church Town.
