«b»CORNISHMAN NEWSPAPER.«/b» OCTOBER 2 1902 «b»Richard Eddy 1871-26 September 1902«/b» «b»The Late Mr. Richard Eddy.—«/b»On the evening of Friday, the death took place, of Richard, the eldest son of Sarah and the late Richard Eddy, of Sea-view, Lower Trewellard, after a lingering illness at the age of 31 years. In 1889, Mr. Eddy Left Pendeen, the place of his birth for Kimberley, South Africa, where he laboured for 14 months, and then returned home. After spending three months in the old country, he went a second time to Kimberley and worked there for seven years ; and paid another visit to the place of his parentage, and for the third time went to South Africa. During the last stay of four years he was engaged in fighting for his country in the recent Boer. For six months he was in the Free State, and his first duty was to serve in the Ambulance corps. Leaving this work he joined the Imperial Light horse, as a private, and, after having several hard struggles in military service, be got promoted to the rank of corporal. About two years ago, while engaged as a soldier, his health failed, and before he had freedom from sickness he enlisted with the Johannesburg Mounted rifles. The brave soldier, finding no improvement in his health, was forced to give up his duty, and left for home where he arrived six months ago suffering from lung disease, from which he never recovered. For several years he was a member of the Independent Order of Oddfellows, Manchester Unity, (,South African branch, ) and was also a member of the St. Just Artillery Volunteer band, in former years, and when very young he joined Trewellard cricket club, his services being valuable. He bore his affliction with cheerful resignation and fortitude and always conveyed freely with those whom he met daily.
