| Shared note | Given that Jane's age was recorded as 25 in the 1841 census, this suggests her birth year was 1812-1816 due to rounding. The only appropriate baptism I can find for a Jane is the daughter of William EDDY & Elizabeth -, 17 Jun 1817 in St Just in Penwith. This then matches well with the following entry in the 1851 census, ref 60 Church Village, Morvah (transcription from Ron Rowe): Eddy«tab»Jane«tab»head«tab»u«tab»34«tab»Dress maker«tab»St Just«tab» This would have meant that Jane was living next door to her sister Eliza who married Richard EDDY. I believe it is this Jane who is in the 1861 census at The Globe Inn, 1 Queen Street, Penzance, unmarried, visitor, 44 Dressmaker born St Just. After this I made an interesting revelation! I found a marriage in 1861 for a Jane EDDY, which stated her as a spinster 'of full age' whose father was William, a carpenter. It matched quite well, but why should she marry so late in life? And without the age at marriage I couldn't be sure it was even this Jane. She had married a Richard EDDY, which didn't at first ring any bells... I then found Richard and Jane in the 1871 census, with a child (Eliza) who must have been from Richard's first marriage (Richard had been recorded as a widower when he married Jane). I then looked up suitable baptism entries for Eliza and then the penny dropped: Richard's first wife was Eliza who was Jane's sister! (Also note that Richard and Eliza/Jane were 1st cousins!) |
