Shared note

The only information I have that suggests Jakeh belongs to this William EDDY and Elizabeth (GRILLS) is that a witness at their wedding was a Jakeh EDDY. I don't know who this witness Jakeh was or how he was related to William (if at all), but at least there is a connection between William and Elizabeth and the name Jakeh.

In an email from Pauline from New Zealand: We were told some years back that Jaketh EDDY & his son came to NZ before the rest of the family but have been unable to find them. Elizabeth EDDY (WEARN) came to NZ in 1877 with Elizabeth Ann & her husband Richard Saundry LEGGOE also her other children William bc 1842, Thomas bc 1845 & Eliza bc 1851. Thinking that Jakeh bc1839 was also thier son we have unable to find him either. An obituary for Elizabeth states that her husband Jaketh died (c 20 Dec 1873) in Cornwall before she came to NZ.

If Jakeh and his son did go to New Zealand before the rest of the family, Jakeh senior must have returned to England if he died there, and must have been and returned between censuses. I have three suggestions for Jakeh junior's absence from the 1861 and 1871 censuses, either he died, or if he did go to New Zealand with his father he could have stayed there. An alternative suggestion is that he may have gone to South Africa.
