Shared note

Notes from David John & Lorraine Eddy: This is copied from a letter written to Lorraine Eddy, by Maxwell Coad, John's grandson, around 1991. I have added notes on his, his brothers & fathers movements under his father's notes. Peruse other brothers for similar general information.

Dear Lorraine, This is a brief summary of John Newton Eddy's life as I know it. He came to Bendigo from Walleroo and worked in the mines here (gold). As yet I have not been able to find which ones. He married Eleanor Williams (known as Lena) of Huntly, when they were both 29 years of age. I am enclosing a copy of their wedding certificate. After marriage they lived at California Gully on the Bendigo Goldfields where John and 2 of his brothers sang with the Methodist Church Chior. After their first son was born, they moved to Kalgoorlie (WA) soon after he died, aged 8 months and lived and worked on the Bank of England lease at Brown Hill. They had a second son soon after, he also died only a few months old and is buried at Kalgoorlie Cemetery. They then had twins, Elsie Newton (my mother) and Leslie David. Later they had another set of twins, 2 girls who died and were buried at Kalgoorlie also. They shifted from the mine lease and lived in Boulder City but I don't know what street etc. They then returned to Bendigo where John again worked in the mines, when they returned here Mum was 9 years old. John then went to South Africa to work in the mines as an underground manager, he left his family here while he got established, some time later he asked Eleanor to sell up and come over. They had the sale and were booked to go when they received word not to come as he was on his way home very ill with miners complaint. After he came home he had the Cumberland Hotel until it became too much for him. They then lived in Golden Square, another Bendigo suburb where he died when he was 48 years old. I was told that his last words were, " don't let any of the boys work in the mines". Mum was only 14 when her father died.

   Kind regards,

Max Coad. (Max died after this letter)
