Shared note

There is only one appropriate marriage register entry for a James and Jane before 1799 (when son John was born), namely James EDDY and Jane THOMAS, 27 Oct 1798 in St Just in Penwith.

Looking for baptism entries for a James, at least 18 years before marrying, gives the following, sons of: (a) John EDDY & Mary, 10 Dec 1744, St Just in Penwith (b) Mathew & Jone, 12 Nov 1748, Zennor (c) John EDDY, 09 Apr 1751, Madron (d) James EDDY, 21 Aug 1763, Madron (e) John EDDY, 05 Nov 1763, St Just in Penwith (f) John EDDY & Mary, 05 Jan 1772, St Just in Penwith

Investigating all the possible marriages for James EDDYs: (A) Loveday HATTAM, 12 Aug 1783, St Just in Penwith (B) Honor GRENFELL, 14 Aug 1784, St Just in Penwith (C) Elizabeth DAVY, 11 Nov 1795, St Just in Penwith (D) Jane THOMAS, 27 Oct 1798, St Just in Penwith

Investigation of children born to the couples provides clues such that I believe (e) married (B), as they had several children including Honor and Susanna (named after James's mother). Given that James and Jane, (D), named their first son John, it seems probable that James's father was called John. Also, their second daughter was named Mary - possibly after James's mother, so (f) seems the most probable baptism for this James since (a) (and maybe (c) if that John's wife was Mary) were probably too old.

In addition to the children listed to James and Jane (John, James, Jane, Mary, William and Richard) there were 2 other children baptised to a James and Jane in St Just in Penwith. At first I thought they may have belonged to this couple but as they were baptised on 21 Feb 1823 (Francis EDDY) and 25 Oct 1825 (Thomas Henry EDY), this James and Jane would have been suspiciously old. The alternative James and Jane (BOASE) were married in St Buryan on 23 Mar 1820, and although it appears they had a son James baptised 30 Jul 1820 in St Buryan, not St Just, Thomas Henry was definitely their son as his daughter Jessie was living with James and Jane (her grandparents) in the 1871 census.
