Marriage

Date based on daughter Mary's baptism record, although no marriage is recorded in the register.

Notes from Richard Grylls: On my tree 4A (shown in my book 'Grylls and Grills' - copies in the Morrab (private) Library, and at CSC Redruth) there is a GRILLS/EDDY marriage, [which] I have never been able to find, but it must have happened in about 1763, most probably in St. Just and merely omitted from the register. Thomas EDDY married Mary (b.1734 Southill), the daughter of Henry GRILLS and Mary nee JORDAN. The whole family were well settled in St. Just by 1763. I know the marriage happened because 'my sister Mary Eddy' is mentioned in the will of Mary's brother, Henry GRILLS (d.1782). Thomas EDDY also signed his name in the GRILLS family bible.

Shared note

Due to Thomas having a daughter Esther, Esther being such an unusual name and William EDDY and Mary GRENFELL (my 4th g-grandparents) also having a daughter Esther, I feel there must be a connection between them.

I cannot find a marriage entry for Thomas and Mary. Thomas would have been at least 18 when daughter Mary was baptised in 1764, so possible baptisms are: (a) 17 May 1713, Sennen, William EDDY & Elizabeth - (b) 14 Feb 1724, Zennor, Thomas EDDY & Anne - (c) 13 Apr 1735, St Just in Penwith, William EDDY & - - (d) 14 Mar 1736, St Just in Penwith, Joseph EDDY & - - (e) 04 Sep 1742, St Just in Penwith, Thomas EDDY & Jane -

Although (a) and (b) are possible, I believe they are less likely than the other 3 options, due to their age. So in trying to identify which of these baptisms is most likely to be the Thomas EDDY in question, I had a look at the siblings of (a) to (e), in search of similar family names. (b) had siblings John (27 Aug 1727), Mary (10 Jul 1731) and William (10 Sep 1738), and the most likely marriage for their father is Thomas married Ann CHRISTOPHER 20 Apr 1723, Zennor. (c) had siblings William (25 Aug 1733), Elizabeth (12 Jun 1737), Jennifer (30 Jun 1739) and John (05 Nov 1741), and the most likely marriage for their father is William married Bridget BAYNARD, 19 Oct 1732, Madron. (d) had siblings Mary (05 Feb 1738), Joseph (09 Jun 1740) and Jane (24 Apr 1743), and a possible marriage for their father is Joseph and Julian EDY, St Just, 2 Nov 1729. (e) had siblings Jane (22 Jun 1744), Stephen (01 Nov 1746), Jakeh (02 Mar 1750) and Andrew (02 Feb 1752). Couldn't find a marriage for their parents.

The best I can propose with the current information, although it is quite a weak link, is that I think (c) is the Thomas in question. There are 2 main reasons, firstly he would have both a daughter and a sister named Jennifer (the most unusual of the names, although the same can be said of the names Elizabeth and William), and secondly he would have a brother William (baptised 1733) that could be the father of the illegitimate William (baptised 10 Nov 1764) that had a daughter Esther.

Possible burial for this Thomas is 21 Feb 1776. This could explain why there are no more children after Jenefer was baptised in 1776, and also that his wife Mary was recorded as widow when she died (although that burial record might not be hers...). This date would also concur with the fact that when Mary's brother Henry GRILLS died in 1782, he willed £3 per year to 'Mary Eddy, my sister' - had Thomas EDDY not already died before 1782, Henry GRILLS might not have willed the annual amount to his sister.
