George G. EDDY Death: |
| Shared note | Obituary: The Forbes Times, Saturday, July 20, 1912. OBITUARY. MR. CHRISTOPHER EDDY. Another old identity of Forbes passed away early on Wednesday morning in the person of Mr. Christopher Eddy, one of the founders of the firm of C. and J. Eddy, which for many years did good business in Forbes. Mr. Eddy was 87 years of age, and his death was really due to senile decay. Mr. John Eddy, who died some years ago, and Mr. Christopher Eddy left their home in Cornwall for Australia as far back as 1857, and in 1862 the rush attracted them to Forbes. Here they settled, and entered into business as cordial makers, and both were known as unobtrusive unassuming Christian gentlemen, whose word was their bond. Mr. Christopher Eddy, who enjoyed splendid health until a few months back, was a widower, and he leaves one son, Mr. G. G. Eddy. With the latter and his wife much sympathy is expressed. Mr. Eddy's remains were removed to the Methodist Church, and from here the funeral started on Thursday afternoon. The Rev. A. W. Parton conducted the services in the Church and at the grave-side. It is a perfectly safe thing to say that Mr. Christopher Eddy never had an enemy in Forbes, and he died as he had lived, a practical and conscientious Christian. His acts of charity were many, but were bestowed in such an unassuming manner that few people ever got to hear of them. The Forbes Advocate, Friday, July 19, 1912 DEATH OF A PIONEER. THE LATE MR CHRISTOPHER EDDY. By the death of Mr Christopher Eddy, the town of Forbes has lost one of its very oldest and most highly respected residents. Mr Eddy passed peacefully away on Tuesday morning, at his late residence, "Trelawney," Browne-street, after an illness extending over eleven weeks. The direct cause of death was a clot of blood forming in one of the main arteries of his leg. His case was hopeless from the first, as the chances of curing this ailment are very remote. Everything possible to relieve the sufferer was done by his doctor, but without avail, and the patient displayed surprising fortitude for one of his advanced age. The late Mr Eddy had reached the fine old age of 88 years and eight months. He was a native of Cornwall, in England, and after trying his fortune on the gold fields of Victoria, he took up his residence in Forbes just 43 years ago. Like many other men, Mr Eddy was attracted to Australia by the stories that gold could be picked up in the streets, and he spent upwards of eight years on the various Victorian diggings, meeting with considerable success. In those palmy days many miners amassed great fortunes in a single day, and the fields were peopled with teeming thousands of fossickers, the diggers coming from almost every country in the world. Gold there was in abundance, and money was thrown about indiscriminately. Young Eddy, however, was of a saving disposition, and kept away from the temptations of gambling and the like, preferring to rest in his tent, and indulge in study, instead of joining the ranks of the gold-fields' merry-makers. Thirty-six years ago Mr Eddy purchased a cordial making business in Forbes, which was carried on by him self and his brother John. Six years ago, however, Mr John Eddy died, and the business was thereupon transferred to Mr George Eddy, who, meeting with a very serious accident three years ago, was forced to retire from active life. The late Mr Eddy was of a very retiring disposition, and took no active part in public life. Many a time he had been urged to become a candidate for municipal and other honors, but he could not be persuaded. He was highly esteemed by all classes, and the flag on the town hall was flown at half mast as a token of respect to the deceased. Mr Christopher Eddy was a very temperate man and a non-smoker, and his family have been famed for their longevity. He was an upright, as well as an energetic man, and only a few days before his illness he said he felt well enough to walk across to Parkes and back. Mr George Eddy is the only surviving member of the family, as the late Mr Eddy was pre-deceased by his wife and daughter. The remains were interred in the Wesleyan portion of the cemetery, and the Rev. Mr Parton preached an eloquent panegyric at the graveside, speaking of the deceased as being one of nature's gentlemen, a man who stood up for the cause of truth and right in every case. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr Luthje. |
