Marriage

Notes from Geoff McKee: James EDDY (son of John EDDY and Mary MATTHEW) married Loveday HATTAM (daughter of Thomas HATTAM and Loveday TRESIZE) 12 Aug 1783 St Just by banns, both of this parish, in the presence of Nich. RESEIGH and Esther GRILLS.

I need to investigate James's parents further.

Shared note

Looking for possible baptism entries for James, assuming he was at least 18 years old when married, he would have been born 1765 or before. Also, in Phillimore and Taylor's marriage transcripts, neither James nor Loveday were described as being from another parish, so presumably they were from St Just. Possible baptisms between 1740 and 1765 from nearby parishes, are James, son of: (a) John EDDY & Mary -, 10 Dec 1744, St Just in Penwith (b) Mathew EDDY & Jone -, 12 Nov 1748, Zennor (c) John EDDY & - -, 09 Apr 1751, Madron (d) James EDDY & - -, 21 Aug 1763, Madron (e) John EDDY & - -, 05 Nov 1763, St Just in Penwith

Of these, (e) would initially seem the most appropriate, but I believe that he married Honour GRENFELL on 14 Aug 1784 in St Just. Both James and John are names passed down to the following generation, so that doesn't help decide. Cannot find an MI that fits any of these 3.

These are the burial records for a James EDDY: (A) in St Just in Penwith, 31 May 1796 (B) in St Just in Penwith, 30 May 1807 (C) in Penzance, on 01 Jan 1817 aged 66, implying born 1751, which would tally well with (c).

Of these, (A) would tally well with this James as I cannot find any more baptisms for children of James after 1795. (B) tallies well with James who married Honour GRENFELL, as his last child is baptised 1804. However, I can't find a burial record for James EDDY (a), so he could be burial (A) or (B).

In any case, the burials and MIs provide no extra clues as to who where the parents of James EDDY that married Loveday HATTAM. So, based mainly on location, I have assumed for now that his parents were John and Mary, i.e. baptism (a). As mentioned above, Phillimore and Taylor doesn't state that James or Loveday were from another parish, and assuming baptism (e) married Honour GRENFELL, this leaves (a).

Incidentally, James's sister Elizabeth, married Loveday HATTAM's brother John.
