| Shared note | Previously I had Nowell MATTHEW bap. 18 Jul 1682 Ashwater, Devon son of John, and Mary PENBERTHY bap. 17 Jan 1673/4 St Just as Mary's parents, with Mary's siblings: Ann bap. 1 Oct 1709, Margaret bap. 29 Dec 1715 and Grace bap. 25 Apr 1718, all St Just. However, based on info from Geoff McKee, I changed Mary's parents to Peter MATTHEWS and Hester COCK. The only baptism I can find (in the IGI) that would fit Peter MATTHEWS and Hester COCK is for a Mary baptised 6 Apr 1713 in St Hilary, daughter of Peter. I'm not sure whether this is the same family, but I can't find an alternative Peter MATTHEWS that was around at that time. It is suspicious that Mary was baptised in St Hilary, as all her siblings were baptised in St Just. It is also suspicious that she was baptised so close to her sister, Sarah 13 Jun 1713 in St Just. Perhaps she was an eligitimate child, which could be why only her father's name is listed. In any case, the clinching piece of information (from Geoff McKee) is that there was a will made 15 Jun 1760 by Peter MATTHEW, taylor, naming his sister Mary, wife of John EDDY. It was proved 7 Aug 1765. As the only baptism I can find for a Peter that could have made the will is that of Peter baptised 4 Nov 1700 in St Just, son of Peter MATTHEWS and Hester COCK, I have assumed Mary to be their daughter. The name Pascoe, given to Mary's son is an unusual name, and the first EDDY baptism of that name. The name may have come from Mary's paternal grandmother's maiden name. There is a possible burial for this Mary, recorded as a widow, 8 Jan 1766, St Just in Penwith. |
