| Shared note | On 1 Nov 1840, when son William was baptised, William (snr) was recorded as a miner of Church Town. The 1841 census, at New Chapel Street, St Just in Penwith, ref 6-92: EDDY«tab»William«tab»25«tab»M«tab»Tin Miner«tab» EDDY«tab»Jane«tab»25«tab»F«tab»«tab» EDDY«tab»William«tab»8m«tab»M«tab»«tab» On 28 Aug 1842, 7 Apr 1844, 19 Jul 1846 and 23 Jul 1848, when daughters Jane Boyns, Ann, Agnes and Mary Susan were baptised, William was recorded as being a miner of Bostraze. (Source: Cornwall OPC). However the family must have moved between 1848 and 1850, as on 3 Feb 1850, when daughter Elizabeth was baptised, William is recorded as being a miner of Boscaswell Row. The 1851 census at No.106 at Boscaswell Row, Boscaswell, St Just in Penwith (transcription courtesy of Geoff McKee): William«tab»EDDY«tab»«tab»H«tab»m«tab»34«tab»miner«tab»b. St Just Elizabeth«tab»"«tab»«tab»D«tab»«tab»1«tab»«tab»b. St Just On 27 Feb 1853, when son John Boyns was baptised, William was recorded as a Mine Agent of Boscaswell. And on 4 Apr 1855 when daughter Victoria was baptised, William was a Mine Agent of Pendeen. But on 25 Jun 1856 when daughter Margaret was baptised, William was a Mine Agent of 'Carlatha'. There is a lease for Carlartha (CRO ref X110/7, 1714-1890), relevant section is: 8) Parties: Samuel and John Borlase to William Eddy. Counterpart demise of premises and part of Boscawell Downs, 1855. We can also eliminate couple (c), as their William was still living with them in the 1841 census and then married an Elizabeth (they were in the 1871 census with his mother, Charlotte). We can also eliminate couple (d) as their William was also still living with them in the 1841 census. This leaves (b) as the only option, although for a little more certainty I would've liked to see the name Rebecca passed on to William's children. The Cornwall Online Parish Clerk database has further details in the marriage transcription, saying that William (23, miner, of Botallack) was the son of William (Miner). The following are the key points of an indenture (?) transcribed from Cornwall Record Office ref. X/110/7/8 which I believe refers to this William EDDY: 29 Sep 1855 Samuel Borlase esq. and John Borlase esq. to William Eddy - Demise of premises in Carlatha and part of Boscaswell Downs in St Just. 3 lives: Lessee aged 40 years, his sons William aged 15 years and John aged 3 years Rent £3.5 |
