Shared note

Notes from Janice Allen: On 1881 Census Benjamin and Elizabeth Ann are living at Boswedan Lane, St Just and children listed are Ann Eddy (from Benjamin's first marriage) and their own son James born about 1880.

On 1891 Census they are living at Victoria Row, St. Just and children listed are Ann E 1875, James 1880, Benjamin 1881, Henry Hodge 1883, William Lawry 1886, Mary Matilda 1887, George 1888 and Frances 1890. Bit of a shock finding all these children!

On 1901 Census they are living in Truthwall, St. Just. Elizabeth is now a widow. Ann E. and James are possibly married by now. All the rest of the children are listed except William Lawry who I can't find a death for nor whether he was staying in someone else's house that day - he is named after Benjamin's mother, Mary Ann Lawry. Another child was added to the flock, Dorothy born 1892. So in the end there were 9 children in total!

After the Wheal Owles mine disaster in 1893 there had been a lot of unrest in the mining community and in 1895 Benjamin was offered a job as Captain of the Balmoral Gold Mining Company in Johannesburg. Unfortunately he contracted a fever in 1898 and died there.
