| Shared note | Assuming Jacob was at least 18 when married, there are 2 possible baptism records for Jacob before 1759, son of: (a) John EDY & Mary -, 24 Dec 1731, St Just in Penwith (b) Oliver EDDY & Elizabeth, St Just in Penwith, 20 Feb 1742 I can't be sure which of these is this Jacob, but I have chosen (b) until proven otherwise. The main reason is that there were children born to this Jacob that weren't baptised (see below), one of which could have been Oliver. It appeasr that one of Jacob's children was called Mary, which casts a little doubt over (b) and supporting (a). However, I believe Jacob (a) married Mary and had at least 5 children including Elizabeth baptised 1753 (i.e. it couldn't have been Jacob (b) that had a daughter baptised 11 years after him). In Phillimore and Taylor, the marriage between Jacob EDDY and Grace CHYRGWIN has them both recorded as widows. The only Jacob marriage I found before this date is Jacob and Elizabeth GORNINAN, 15 Jan 1767. There is also a marriage between a Jacob EDDY and Elizabeth BOSPIDNECK, 13 Jan 1784, St Just in Penwith - this means that all children born to "Jacob and Elizabeth" before 1784 must belong to Jacob and Elizabeth GORNINAN - but there were no baptisms. There were, however, a couple of burials (those of Jacob and Mary), children of Jacob, which must belong to this couple. It appears that at least 2 baptisms were not recorded for children born to Jacob EDDY and Elizabeth GORNINAN. Given this pattern of not baptising their children, another child which I believe to be theirs is Oliver EDDY who was buried in St Just in Penwith on 24 Feb 1837 aged 70. This would imply he was born in 1767, and would have been named after Jacob's father. When Grace was buried, she was recorded as the wife of Jacob - not as widow - suggesting Jacob died after 18 Mar 1797. There is a burial for a Jacob, 26 Nov 1811, St Just in Penwith, which could belong to this Jacob, but as there were several other Jacobs around at that time, further investigation is required. |
