Robert first worked in a hardware store and then worked for Abbotts shoe shop in Bendigo. He was a member of the Eaglehawk Rowing Club and a Lacrosse team. He went to Echuca to manage a branch of Abbotts for six months and stayed there for the rest of his life. When Abbotts closed he opened his own shoe shop. He was a cricketer, lawn bowler, also timekeeper and boot stopper for the Echuca F.C. for 25yrs. He was in the Echuca Federal Band and Treasurer for many years. He also liked to sing, and was in the Echuca Fire Brigade.
