Marriage

I.G.I. M020311

Notes from Geoff McKee: John EDDY (son of Jacob EDDY and Elizabeth BUSPIDNECK) married Mary EDWARDS (daughter of Andrew EDWARDS and Loveday ?) 13 Oct 1818 in St Just by banns, both single, both of this parish, in the presence of ----- and Jno. TREGEAR.

Shared note

The only marriage in or around St Just in Penwith between a John EDY/EDDY and a Mary for the few years before son George was baptised was that of John EDDY and Mary EDWARDS, 13 Oct 1818, St Just in Penwith. Checking baptism records gave several children born to this couple.

In an imported file John's baptism was originally recorded as 6 Nov 1791 but I'm not sure if this is correct. This would make John the son of James EDDY and Loveday HATTAM. Assuming John was at least 18 when married he would have been born on or before 1800. Looking for possible baptism records generates 12 possibles between 1780 and 1800. I haven't yet checked all these possibilities, but one is the son of Jacob EDDY and Elizabeth BUSPIDNECK. Jacob and Elizabeth had several children whose names were common to John and Mary's family; Richard, John, George, William and Jacob. Due to the similarity in names, and that Geoff McKee concurs, I have linked Jacob EDDY and Elizabeth BUSPIDNECK as the parents of John. The imported file also had John first married to Mary TREWENA, 28 Oct 1806, Redruth, St Uny. I feel this is most likely to be a mistake.

In the 1841 census, ref St Just in Penwith, 9-83 (Trevegean Vean): EDDY«tab»Mary«tab»45«tab»F«tab»Widow«tab» EDDY«tab»Richard«tab»20«tab»M«tab»Tin Miner«tab» EDDY«tab»John«tab»15«tab»M«tab»Tin Miner«tab» EDDY«tab»William«tab»14«tab»M«tab»«tab» EDDY«tab»James«tab»9«tab»M«tab»«tab» EDDY«tab»Edward«tab»6«tab»M«tab»«tab» Note: also living with Alice BENNETTS, 15, Female Servant

Also in the 1841 Census, at Nanquidno, St Just, George EDDY, 15, b.Cornwall; male servant with Elizabeth OATS and family. The 1841 Census further had at Bosorne, St Just, Jacob EDDY, 13, servant with John THOMAS and family.

In the 1851 census at no.76 at Brea, Little Trevegean, St Just: Mary«tab»EDDY«tab»H«tab»wid«tab»57«tab»housekeeper«tab»b.St Just John«tab»"«tab»S«tab»u«tab»29«tab»«tab»«tab»" William«tab»"«tab»S«tab»u«tab»22«tab»«tab»«tab»" Jacob«tab»"«tab»S«tab»u«tab»20«tab»«tab»«tab»" James«tab»"«tab»S«tab»u«tab»18«tab»«tab»«tab»" Edward«tab»"«tab»S«tab»«tab»15«tab»«tab»«tab»"

In the 1861 and 1871 censuses, Mary EDDY widow is living with son John and family (ref St Just in Penwith 13-69 and St Just in Penwith 13-7 respectively)

I believe this John EDDY is the one that was killed by lightning! See newspaper article in notes for son James.

Notes from Geoff McKee: John EDDY was buried 28 May 1841 St Just aged 45 of Trevegean.
