| Shared note | Details of John's marriage and descendants have been pieced together relatively easily, however, working out who John's father was is more difficult. Unfortunately there is no indication of birth year, other than he must have been old enough to get married on 9 Aug 1832. Assuming he was at least 18 when married, there are 11 baptism records in St Just between 1814 and 1785 (arbitrarily chosen, but anything earlier would've meant marrying aged over 47 - unlikely but not impossible). The baptism records are: (a) James EDDY & Honor - 11 Mar 1787 (b) William EDDY & Mary - 16 Apr 1788 (c) James EDDY & Honor - 20 Mar 1791 (d) James EDDY & Loveday - 06 Nov 1791 (e) Jacob EDDY & Elizabeth - 03 Jul 1796 (f) William EDDY & Ann - 02 Apr 1797 (g) James EDDY & Jane - 17 Mar 1799 (h) William EDDY & Mary - 31 Oct 1802 (i) Oliver EDDY & Mary - 16 Oct 1803 (j) John EDDY & Elizabeth - 09 Mar 1809 (k) William EDDY & Elizabeth - 01 Nov 1813 Of these, (a) died, and (e), (g), (h), (i) and (k) have been attributed to other families. This leaves 5 options, 4 of which I can't immediately eliminate. The only other clue is the naming pattern of John's children, who were James Hicks EDDY and Susannah EDDY. The first son was often named after the father or sometimes the grandfather. Susannah was quite an unusual name, so who was she named after? Because of these names, I think there is a strong probability that John was the son of James and Honour, (c), as James' mother was named Susannah, as was his sister. Although not conclusive, I believe this is most likely lineage. |
