Shared note | In the 1841 census, from Geoff McKee, at North Street, Penzance: David«tab»EDDY«tab»70«tab»ag. lab. David«tab»"«tab»35«tab»carrier Mary«tab»"«tab»25 Elizabeth«tab»"«tab» 2 In the 1861 Census, the family were in Penzance, ref 20-228: EDDY«tab»David«tab»Head«tab»M«tab»53«tab»Gulval EDDY«tab»Mary«tab»Wife«tab»M«tab»47«tab»St Buryan EDDY«tab»David«tab»Son«tab»U«tab»18«tab»Penzance EDDY«tab»Mary«tab»Daughter«tab»U«tab»16«tab»Penzance EDDY«tab»Eliza Jane«tab»Daughter«tab»-«tab»7«tab»Penzance In the 1871 Census, the family were in Penzance, ref 19-88: EDDY«tab»David«tab»Head«tab»W«tab»65«tab»Gulval EDDY«tab»Eliza Jane«tab»Daughter«tab»-«tab»17«tab»Penzance In the 1881 Census, the family were living at 36 St Clare Street, (Madron) Penzance, Cornwall, England (ref. FHL Film 1341564 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 2346 Folio 75 Page 7): David EDDY«tab»W«tab»78 «tab»M«tab»Gulval«tab»Head«tab»Carrier Retired Eliza Jane EDDY«tab»U«tab»26 «tab»F«tab»Penzance«tab»Daur Although the above entries from the different censuses give a range of ages (and hence possible birth years) for David, I believe they are the same family. However, this range of birth years presents a problem when looking for a baptism record for David. Given that David was born in Gulval and assuming he was also baptised there, there are 2 baptism records for David EDDYs: (a) son of David EDDY & Elizabeth -, 22 Nov 1801, Gulval (b) son of Richard EDDY & Elizabeth -, 9 Nov 1806 Gulval Given the possible birth years from the census returns - 1803, 1806 and 1808 - baptism (b) is the most likely. However, there is another entry in the 1871 Census for a David EDDY which could be for baptism (b), ref Gulval 25-12: EDDY«tab»David«tab»Head«tab»M«tab»65«tab»Gulval - CON«tab» EDDY«tab»Jane«tab»Wife«tab»M«tab»67«tab»Paul - CON«tab» This couple were also in the 1861 census, ref Gulval 25-81: EDDY«tab»David«tab»Head«tab»M«tab»52«tab»Gulval - CON EDDY«tab»Jane«tab»Wife«tab»M«tab»56«tab»Gulval - CON The following entry in the 1841 Census (Gulval, ref 27-347) could belong to either of these 2 David EDDYs as ages were rounded down to the nearest 5: EDDY«tab»David«tab»30«tab»M«tab»Agricultural Labourer«tab» However, it is the entry in the marriage register that solves the problem (courtesy of Geoff McKee) as it lists the fathers and their occupations: David EDDY carrier of Madron, bachelor of full age married Mary Ann EDDY spinster of Lower Trevorian, of full age, on 2 Apr 1839 St Buryan. David EDDY sen. was a lab. William EDDY was a farmer. Note that Geoff McKee also has another daughter to this family, Elizabeth Ann b.1841 that married John Mark BERRIMAN 14 Nov 1870 Gulval. I haven't yet found David and family in the 1851 census, which would prove (or not) Elizabeth's inclusion in this family. There is, however, an Elizabeth Ann EDDY in the 1861 census of the right age, working as a servant in Gulval (ref 26-20): EDDY«tab»Elizabeth Ann«tab»Servant«tab»U?«tab»21«tab»Penzance EDDY«tab»Thomas«tab»Servant«tab»W«tab»55«tab»Sancreed I don't know the connection (if any) with Thomas EDDY. |
